MAPrc publication in Nature Reviews Neurology

Hoy KE, Fitzgerald PB. "Brain stimulation in psychiatry and its effects on cognition”. Nature Reviews Neurology. In Press.

Nature Reviews Neurology has recently (February 2010) accepted for publication a review by MAPrc researchers Dr Kate Hoy and Professor Paul Fitzgerald. Entitled “Brain stimulation in psychiatry and its effects on cognition”, the article reviews the past, present and future role of brain stimualtion in psychiatry with particular reference to its effects on cognition. The refinement of brain stimulation in psychiatry has been largely motivated by a desire to achieve the clinical efficacy of Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) and to eliminate the associated cognitive side effects.

This has led to attempts to reduce cognitive side effects in ECT, a resurgence of interest in transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS), the development and refinement of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), the introduction of invasive brain stimulation into psychiatry (Deep Brain and Epidural Cortical Stimulation, [DBS, EpCS]), and the emergence of Magnetic Seizure Therapy (MST).  The review discusses these advances and provides comments on the current and future role of brain stimulation in psychiatry.

Dr Hoy is a Research Fellow / Clinical Neuropsychologist at MAPrc in the Brain Stimulation and Neuroscience research stream, having completed her undergraduate and postgraduate studies at MonashUniversityIn 2009 Dr Hoy was awarded a NHMRC postdoctoral training fellowship to investigate the cognitive outcomes of Magnetic Seizure Therapy for the treatment of depression. She has been conducting research into brain stimulation and psychiatry under the supervision and guidance of Professor Fitzgerald for the last eight years.

Prof Fitzgerald is the Deputy Director of the Monash Alfred Psychiatry Research Centre, where he heads up the Brain Stimulation and Neuroscience research stream. He has been conducting translational research into brain stimulation in psychiatry for fifteen years, and is the foremost brain stimulation researcher in Australia. Having built one of the most advanced brain stimulation and imaging research programs in the world, which includes investigations of tDCS, TMS, DBS and MST, Prof Fitzgerald plays a leading role in the development of Brain Stimulation methods in psychiatry.

The Nature Reviews clinical journals commission leaders in the field to write clinical content of the highest quality, authority and accessibility. The Nature Reviews clinical titles were formerly published as the Nature Clinical Practice series. In 2009 the Nature Publishing Group enhanced, redesigned and rebranded the  Nature Clinical Practice journals into Nature Reviews, extending the quality and impact of the Nature Reviews brand into eight clinical specialties; including Nature Reviews Neurology.
