NHMRC funding success

MAPrc has punched above its weight in this year’s NHMRC funding round. The centre received two project grants worth more than $550,000 (and is also co-investigator in an additional grant worth $235,000) and two of its young researchers received individual grants.

MAPrc Director Professor Jayashri Kulkarni will lead a research project investigating the use of Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs) in the treatment of psychosis in women of child-bearing age.  Professor Kulkarni is also a co-investigator in a project on transdermal testosterone therapy for antidepressant-associated sexual dysfunction in women.
MAPrc Deputy Director Professor Paul Fitzgerald is the chief investigator, with MAPrc Research Fellow Dr Kate Hoy as a co-investigator, on a randomised controlled trial of magnetic seizure therapy for major depressive disorder.
Research Fellow Dr Jerome Maller was also successful in the NHMRC funding round, receiving a Career Development Award to continue his work in the area of brain scanning after traumatic brain injury.
Finally, Dr Kate Hoy was recently named a Monash Researcher Accelerator Program Recipient. This is a new program instigated by Monash University Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor & Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Edwina Cornish.  The aim of the MRA program is to recognise and reward research fellows who are performing highly in research and to accelerate their career development. Across the university there were 71 MRA program recipients, representing the top 5 per cent of applications.
